Who doesn’t like to work out while on vacation?Ok, I am sure there are a lot of people who would prefer not to, but sometimes you just can’t help yourself. For me, I love to run when I travel to new cities. Even if its a quick three miler, some weights in the gym or a workout video, it still gets me working up a sweat.
If you prefer to run rather than staying on the treadmill at the hotel gym, you will need a route, right?
- Gmap Pedometer is my go-to tool to create your path. It can calculate the distance during the entire run, from start to finish and you can decide the route you want to run. So if you are more familiar with a particular city and its neighborhoods, this a great option. Plus when I visit sunny Florida, that I know very well, I already have my routes pre-planned.
- Now there are many apps out there, but my favorite is Strava. It provides you with maps of where people locally have run and also includes challenges for you to keep your intensity the same while not in your hometown running the daily route and sticking to your training agenda.
- Map My Run is also a great option, but I find it sometimes to be off on mileage. It is a smart pick for navigating a new destination. Before you leave town, you can load the routes created or those generated by other runners and then follow it when out for a run.
- If you choose to stay indoors, the PEAR app is a great tool and provides you with training runs to conduct while on the treadmill. This way, it’s like you are taking your treadmill class lead by celebrity athletes, all in your ear. It’s a great way to get in a workout rather than just hitting the treadmill and running. It’s always ok to Fartlek while on vacation.
Hotels like the Westin offer the best of both worlds now where some of them provide running gear and local maps of where to run when you visit a new city, making me more susceptible to staying at the Westin.
If you are more into lifting weights or sticking to the hotel gym, I always like to bring some workout videos with me that will have me switching up my routine rather than just sticking to the same old weights. It gets you working different muscles and if you don’t feel like going to the gym, a lot of videos including Tone it Up or The Regimen offer workouts that strictly use your body weight that you can do within the confines of your hotel room.
If you visit a city such as New York, Boston, D.C., LA or Miami, you might be able to find your favorite workout class including Barry’s Bootcamp, SoulCycle or Barre which makes working out while on vacation easier. But why not check out a local Facebook group dedicated to runners, Cross Fit or bikers for the city you are visiting. If you can’t find your typical go-to spot, they might be able to recommend a great alternative and potentially less expensive.
