While running in a half marathon last march, I passed one of the entertainment locations that were all along the course. Now, usually I don’t let these musicians or dancers get the best of me, but in this case, I almost stopped.
They were a group of drummers and steppers going hog wild, and I loved it. They were so into the music, and the beat and everyone would cheer as we ran by them. Some people would stop to take pictures and listen to the music; I was tempted to as well. I did not, as I was on a quest for PR domination. But man, if there were a moment to enjoy the bands, it was that one.
This was not the first time I felt compelled to stop. At a Half Ironman in June, while, on the run course, one of the aid stations was rocking out so much at mile ten that I practically joined them because I needed a boost of energy. I “slowed” down and got down to the sounds of Aerosmith and Run DMC’s “Walk This Way.” I don’t know ’bout you, but anytime I hear that song, I feel compelled to dance instead of run, so maybe I should take it off my playlist.
I know I am not the only one to want to take part in these fun festivities by stopping or slowing down. I wonder if other racers have stopped to the point when five minutes later they realize, “Oh crap, I still have a race to finish!”
Have you ever enjoyed the musical acts during a race so much that you had to stop? Did you regret the decision when your time was five minutes slower? Or did you look at it as a wonderful moment that was worth the stoppage?
What was the best act you have ever stopped for?
