We drink them while in training, for recovery and sometimes as a pick-me-up. But are sports drinks really that good for you? Some may suggest there are too many additives but sometimes that is necessary while logging lots of miles due to how much we sweat and what we need to replenish our systems.
If you are not a fan of Gatorade or other sugary sports drinks, try these out as an alternative before, during and after your run.
More studies are popping up showing that chocolate milk is a great drink to help fuel you after a tough workout. With four grams of carbohydrate to one gram of protein, chocolate milk is said to be very effective in preventing muscles from breaking down, allowing you to have a shorter recovery period. Rich in potassium, calcium, and vitamin D, chocolate milk has become a great choice for recovery as is seen in many professional athletes. My brother loves recovering with chocolate milk while for me it’s the chocolate soymilk. Still a great combination of protein and carbohydrates!
Known as Mother Nature’s sports drink, studies have shown that this option can be just as sufficient in replenishing the body’s needs as sports drinks. Coconut water is great for rehydration due to its high levels of potassium that helps get rid of muscle cramps. If you haven’t noticed already, more events are providing as a recovery tool and more athletes are using it throughout their training. Coconut water is a personal favorite and I find tastes even better than Gatorade. Refreshing and tasty!
