Some Thoughts From Erin: The After Race Slump

For those of you who wonder, yes I get exhausted the week after a long race such as a 70.3, and yes I don’t want to train. Some get right to it, but after I put in many hours upon hours of training for that race to try and PR, I WANT A BREAK! If the race is in the middle of the season, I typically take a week off. If the race is at the end of the season, I don’t get on my bike for 2 weeks to a month. Yes, it’s insane, but it works for me.

So after CAC 70.3, I took the whole week off from training. Call me crazy, but I think it’s very important to reset the mind and the body. You don’t want to jump back into something if you aren’t looking forward to it. If the thought of swimming, biking or running makes you queasy, then take some time off. That way, when you start back up again, you’ll still love it and appreciate it just as much as you did before the race. Training is important, but if you aren’t ready to jump back in, take some time to yourself and do something different. Go to yoga, try standup paddle-boarding, go on a hike or go dancing! You can still have fun, appreciate nature and your body without pushing it too hard, too soon after a race.

Remember it’s about accomplishing goals and to always,
