Surf City Half Marathon

Surf City Half Marathon
Huntington Beach, CA
February 2nd, 2014
Finish Time- 1:52:52
AG (25-29)- 99th/1227

It was nice to finally get out of the snow and cold ridden east coast and head on out to sunny San Diego, but sadly it was chilly there too! We arrived in San Diego after a long flight and that evening I was able to meet up with a few friends I haven’t been able to see in over a year.

Saturday morning we drove on up to Huntington Beach and checked into our hotel which was also the host hotel. Best part was that it was right across the street from the expo and would be where the start line was for Sunday’s race. The expo was okay, not a lot of booths to sell things, more just information booths and random crap. That evening we ate our traditional shrimp fried rice and went to bed. The cool thing about this race was that both the marathon and half marathon started and ended in the same spot, but started at different times. So when we woke up we were able to see the marathoners starting as well as a beautiful sunrise.

The race started at 7:45 and off we went down Pacific Coast Highway. It was beautiful and scenic, right along the water. Around mile 2.5/3 we started to head into a local neighborhood but then popped back out onto the PCH. The interesting part about this race was that you could see the oil rigs off of the coast and the ones in the fields right next to the PCH, very strange and I didn’t realize they would be so close to shore!

The weather was around 46 degrees when we started and warmed up a little but it was still pretty chilly. The sun helped but once we hit the turn around at mile 9, there was a headwind which made the conditions colder. During the first 9 miles I would doing pretty well but because they didn’t provide gatorade and instead some natural crap, I wasn’t taking in electrolytes and developed stomach issues. My time slowed down because I wasn’t feeling well. Yet after not being able to run much the month of January I was still happy I finished. Overall it was a beautiful race, run very well, lots of aid stations and many people cheering you on. The medals were awesome, very different but very cool.

Perks: Scenic Course, Medals, Race run very well, Host hotel

Ehhh… Not a Fan: Electrolyte drink, oil rig views, expo
Grade: A-
