The Virginia Beach Half Marathon takes place in September and has a fantastic ending along the boardwalk with the after party on the beach. The course is mainly flat with a minor hill over the bridge. The race after party isn’t just one day it’s the whole weekend, with rock acts on Saturday and Sunday and if you are participating in the race, you get free entry. The town is beautiful, right on the water, but traffic can be a problem. Overall it’s a fun-filled race that Competitor does a great job of putting on and in a fantastic location.
Perks: The race which has thousand of people participating does start in a wave format, but it starts in the same location as the expo so at least you know where you are going. If you find yourself staying in one of the hotels along the beach, do not worry about the mile or so walk to the start because the city puts out shuttles that morning to take you to the starting line. there are also refreshments such as bagels, water, and bananas available along with port o potties. The course takes you past many bands who come to perform for the runners at many different spots along the course and if you like having people cheering you on, well for this race they are present. I still love the fact that the race ends along the boardwalk and you get to hang out on the beach afterward. They also sell marathon gear from the expo afterward so if you miss on your chance at the expo, bring some money because you can buy stuff afterward. But the coolest part is the bling. They have two different medals, one for the relay, and one for the half.
Ehh… Not a Fan: I did not enjoy running through the army base. It wasn’t scenic and rather boring to be honest, and you do it for two miles. For the relay, you also have to get to the switch off spot very early and wait for god knows how long.
Final Grade: B+
All in all, this was a fun and gorgeous race put on by Competitor and I highly suggest it to anyone looking to run their first or 10th half marathon.
